Reference of sensation at the spinal level.

چکیده
After the spino-thalamic tract has been cut in man, loss of sensation of pain and temperature caudal to the lesion is to be expected. In a small proportion of patients, although analgesia-in the usual sense of the term-is present, painful or thermal stimuli applied to parts of the body caudal to the lesion arouse a sensation, which is felt, not at the place actually stimulated, but in a normally innervated part of the body. Thus, a pin applied to the analgesic left leg, for instance, may cause a sensation referred to the normally innervated right leg. This form of reference of sensation following the cutting of the spino-thalamic tract on one side of the cord was described by Ray and Wolff in 1945. A somewhat similar phenomenon had previously been described by Obersteiner in 1881, and named

Differential sensory block: spinal <Emphasis Type="Italic">vs </Emphasis> epidural with lidocaine
Purpose: In this study we sought to determine if and when a difference exists with regards to differential sensory blockade between spinal and epidural anaesthesia using lidocaine. Methods : Ten healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to receive both spinal and epidural anaesthesia. Nonepinephrine containing solutions of lidocaine, 100 mg lidocaine 5% with 7.5% dextrose (spinal) and 600 mg li...
متن کاملDose Measurements of Parotid Glands and Spinal Cord in Conventional Treatment of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Using RANDO Phantom and Thermoluminescent Dosimeters
Introduction Radiotherapy is regarded as the first treatment of choice for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Despite the advantages of radiotherapy, patients may suffer from a wide range of side-effects due to the presence of many sensitive normal tissues in these regions. If the absorbed dose exceeds the tolerance level in parotid glands and the spinal cord, myelopathy, Lhermitte's sign and xerostomia...
متن کاملRapid development of a spinal epidural hematoma following thoracic epidural catheter removal in an esophageal carcinoma surgical patient: a case report
Background The occurrence of spinal epidural hematomas associated with the use of epidural catheters is relatively rare. Furthermore, it is unusual for hematoma-associated neurological symptoms to occur within 15 min of removing a catheter. Here, we report our experience with an esophageal carcinoma surgical patient who developed an epidural hematoma almost immediately after catheter removal, r...
متن کاملComparison of Spinal Anesthesia in L3-L4 and L4-L5 on Sensory-Motor Block Level and Hemodynamic Status in Cesarean Section
Background and Objective: The injection site in spinal anesthesia is one of the factors that can affect the height of the sensory block. This clinical trial study aimed to compare the effect of spinal anesthesia at L3-L4 and L4-L5 on the level of sensory-motor block and hemodynamic status in cesarean section. Materials and Methods: Seventy patients undergoing elective cesarean section and rece...
